In this article, Chris from Maple Bacon Photography will discuss some new and emerging trends in wedding photography. From night portraits to a focus on more candid shots to covering more than just the events on the wedding day, couples have demonstrated a change in taste and style as we begin celebrating weddings again.
Night Portraits
Night offers a unique setting to photograph the happy couple, from skies filled with the endless stars of the Milky Way to streets filled with sparkly lights and speeding cars creating ribbons of light and cool abstract backgrounds. Portraits at night are unique and almost impossible to replicate, leading to an extraordinary portrait to remember your special day.
At Maple Bacon Photography, we love creating unique portraits under cover of darkness. They do take a little extra planning and some special equipment, but at Maple Bacon Photography, we come prepared, and a night portrait session is included in our All-Inclusive Wedding Photography Package. As a bonus, a night shoot will require you to slip out of your reception for a while, giving you and your new spouse a few moments of peace as you take in the epic night sky together.
Candid Group Portraits
After several years of being separated from our friends and family, weddings have become a great way to rekindle friendships and reunite with family. The joy of being together again has been evident at every wedding we have photographed this year. It has naturally led to a decrease in the number of posed formal portraits we do with the bridal party in favour of capturing more candid and unstructured moments. This has led to us finding unique and fun ways to capture you and your bridal party having fun together.
Photographing Other Wedding Events
Weddings are seldom just a one-day event. From rehearsals, dinners, and brunches to welcome events for guests from out of town and dedicated wedding portrait sessions to the bachelor/bachelorette party, there has never been more opportunity to capture fantastic images and powerful moments. With our All-Inclusive Wedding Package, you can add an extra event to your coverage at no extra charge, so let’s take a look at some of the most popular options for extra coverage.
Rehearsal Dinner: The rehearsal dinner is becoming a more important part of the wedding weekend and one where intimate and emotional photos can be captured. It is often a smaller group of people, and the guest list is usually the people closest to the couple. The mix of important people, a more intimate setting, and less pressure usually leads to more candid, unguarded, emotionally authentic moments, which naturally yields incredible photos.
Dedicated Wedding Portrait Session: It is becoming more common for couples to request a wedding photo shoot after the wedding. You get all dressed up in the gown and tuxedo again, but now there is no pressure, and we can go wherever you want and spend as much time as we need to get stunning portraits that are just not possible on the day of the wedding. For example, maybe you love the mountains and hiking; we can scramble up to your favourite peak and grab some genuinely epic wedding photos a few days after your wedding.
As you can see, many exciting new trends in wedding photography exist. But remember, at the end of the day, your wedding photos must authentically capture you and your story. So don’t feel pressured to do something just because it’s trending on Instagram or because it seems outside of the box. If you can dream it, we can shoot it!
FAQ's
The most obvious answer is to look for a photographer who takes photos you like. But, there are a few more things you should consider.
Do you like them? This is critically important because you will spend most of, if not all of, your big day with your photographer. If they take great photos, but you want to gouge your eyes out just being near them, they aren’t the photographer for you.
Do they have backup gear and backup plans? If you hire a professional photographer, they should plan like a professional. At Maple Bacon Photography, we always have backup gear and backup people. We can’t simply re-shoot your wedding on a different day, so we plan for foreseeable problems.
How do they handle data? At Maple Bacon Photography, we take data storage and security seriously. We always have backups and backups of the backups. We understand how precious your photos are, and we take great care in securing them.
Yes! You should absolutely meet them given how much time you will spend with your photographer on your wedding day. You can assess their work through an online gallery, but you can’t assess their personality and whether or not you will work well together.
At Maple Bacon Photography, we believe in this so much that we always offer to take prospective clients out for a cup of coffee, on us, of course.
Yes! Obviously, we are biased, but we genuinely believe wedding photography is important. Capturing the story of your wedding and the special moments that happen throughout the day through the art of photography is worth it!
It gives you a visual and permanent record of a significant moment in your life and the life of your family. Wedding photographs and albums become heirloom items that can be passed from generation to generation, allowing the story of your love to be told and remembered as if it happened yesterday.
Hiring a professional wedding photographer ensures you don’t have to stress about your photos. A professional will be able to capture your wedding and all the moments, big and small, and the details so that you can remember the whole day for years to come. You can be guaranteed results and won’t have to worry that your uncle Ned forgot to charge the battery on his camera.
So it happened, the forecast came true, and that classic Calgary Thunderstorm came rolling through at 3:00 PM, exactly when you were supposed to be getting your bride and groom portraits done. What to do now?
The first option is to wait it out. Often in Calgary and Southern Alberta, the bad weather passes within twenty to thirty minutes. If you have planned enough time for photos, we can wait it out, and you can sneak off to enjoy a few minutes of quiet time with your new spouse.
If waiting it out isn’t an option, we can move to Plan B. This is where having indoor locations to get photos, combined with our location scouting, comes into play.
Finally, if you are adventurous and up for some fun, we embrace the weather and capture some truly one-of-a-kind photos.
